Where to from {“here”}

Being a mother has been the best adventure yet! I love every second of it, but that does not mean it isn’t a challenge. Victor, my son, is now 9 months, and he was around 6 when the internship first started. My working schedule can rage from 5 in the morning to some time after midnight. My husband and I take shifts watching over our son since he, too, works from home. This journey has helped us develop more as a family.

Being scared of success can be an issue for some people, this can be known as imposter syndrome. I’m a 25-year-old graduate who just recently became a mother less than a year ago. I had the career goals aliened for myself when suddenly I discovered I was pregnant my last year in college. My goals soon after shifted.

Imposter syndrome is something I notice now throughout my internship period. See, after giving birth, my mindset was set to how to care for my child. I had self-doubt about my tech skills since the moment I applied to the Outreachy internship. As vulnerable as I felt, I never let that stop me. I have gained confidence in my work, in my skills, and in myself because of this internship. I have developed enough technical experience to further my career as a Frontend Engineer. I want to continue to learn about the best UX practices as well as create more projects in JavaScript. I soon want to start learning React and Angular.

I now feel strong enough to share my skills with my community here in Salinas, CA. It has always been a dream to help educate the underrepresented community I come from. We need more doctors, engineers, political leaders to come from underrepresented communities. With the help from organizations like Outreachy, we can help bring these communities resources and inspiration.
